The Environmental Quality of Our Lakes and Shorelines: A Community Workshop

April 2003

The Oshkosh Area Community Foundation contracted with me to design, facilitate, and report on a historic gathering of groups and citizens committed to charting a future for the environmental quality of the four Winnebago area lakes (Winnebago, Buttes des Mortes, Poygan, and Winneconne) in central Wisconsin.

I worked with a representative planning team to agree on the expected purposes and outcomes. The agenda design included appreciative interviews to surface the reasons for past successes, matrix analysis to look at the combined actions and gaps in the programs and activities of the region’s many environmental groups, and a conversation café to work toward a 10 year vision and priority actions for the next 5 years.

  • The workshop brochure (PDF format) identifies project goals and issues
  • The wall poster helped participants rally around sense of place and visible outcomes. It began as a blank template at the beginning of the workshop and illustrated highlights of the group’s results at the workshop’s end.
  • Results of the workshop and subsequent planning were summarized in a project report (PDF format)
